I named this artwork ‘Nossa Senhora’ because I got the inspiration to create it from the image of Our Lady of Aparecida, the main patroness of Brazil. It is ironic that she is a Black saint, especially as Brazil was a Portuguese colony, and is a country that was built over racist violence and genocide.
Through syncretism with christianity (which was and still is violently imposed) many aspects of African and Indigenous American cultures traditions and religions were able to survive. I see ‘Nossa Senhora’ as an irony and a celebration. Any resemblance to Oshun is not a coincidence. 🙂
PS. I ship internationally! It’s just a bit more expensive!
I post the prints every Monday.
